What to Expect from Canada’s New Prime Minister

October 19, 2015 proved to be a historic day for Canadians across the globe as Justin Trudeau, second youngest and first ever child of a previous Prime Minister, was elected Prime Minister.

Justin Trudeau is the son of Pierre Trudeau who is served as Prime Minister of Canada from April 20, 1968 to June 4, 1979 and again from March 3, 1980 to June 30, 1984. This is the longest term in Canadian history. He comes at a difficult time in the Canadian economy which is currently in recession. That’s why his next movements will be crucial for the future of one of the biggest nation in the world and by extension, the rest of us. Here are some of the things that the world can expect from the new Canadian Prime Minister:

Keystone Pipeline XL

One of the biggest issues that the new Canadian PM will face is the ongoing Keystone Pipeline XL. The oil pipeline system that will run from the US to Canada has already been vetoed in February by US President Barack Obama and is expected to reject the bill. Trudeau is alongside his predecessor’s (Stephen Harper) stance here which is for the completion of the project despite his being known for being a pro-environment advocate. Even though Trudeau supports the controversial project, it is something that is pretty much out of his hands now as he awaits the final decision of the US.

Gun Control, Marijuana

Expect the legalization of marijuana as one of the young Prime Minister’s most famous pledges was to “legalize, regulate and restrict access” to the recreational drug. The announcement follows the recent actions of US States such as Colorado and Washington to legalize medicinal marijuana.

International Partnerships

Among Trudeau’s agenda is strengthening internal relations with its partnership with the US being its top priority. According to Trudeau, he is looking forward to talking with President Obama once elected.

Security

Trudeau is in support of the infamous anti-terrorism law proposed by the Conservatives. Although, Trudeau’s party stated that it would have amendments to parts of the legislation that would give more oversight to the security agencies of Canada.

In any case, the world has already turned its spotlight on Canada and it’s new head. It’s up to Trudeau to live up to his promises or be another disappointment to the nation in the north.
