When some foregin monetary asset or liability is translated for example at balance sheet date we take foreign exchange gain (loss) as unrealised but when the asset or liability is settled i.e. received/paid throug foreing currency the exchange gain (loss) becomes realised.

Realized currency exchange gains and losses can occur when full or partial payments are applied to voucher or invoice amounts.
